Georgian National Ballet "Sukhishvili" - choreographic ensemble, was founded in 1945 under the leadership of Iliko Sukhishvili and Nino Ramishvili. The first concert was held on June 11, 1945. In 1948, the ensemble went beyond the borders of the Soviet Union for the first time. In 1970, the ensemble was granted "academic" status.
"Sukhishvili" has made more than two hundred tours. More than 19,200 performances have been held in 88 countries on five continents. More than 60 million viewers shared the choreographic art of the ensemble. In 1967, the ensemble gave a concert at La Scala and became the first and until now the only folk troupe to perform on the stage of this theater.
The reform implemented in Georgian dance by "Sukhishvili" is close to the so-called with the principles of "modern-ballet", although in its essence and poetics it is Georgian national choreography and the dances staged by the ensemble are based on Georgian folklore.
