The ensemble, famous for its outstanding performance of ancient folk songs and works by modern Georgian composers, was founded in 1985 by legendary musicians Gogi Dolidze and Temur Chkuaseli under the name “Journalism”, which was renamed “Georgian Voices” in 1991.
The artistic director since 1992 has been Robert Gogolashvili. The first line-up was represented by Gia Chirakidze, Davit Abesadze, Gogi Dolidze, Guram Tamazashvili, Temur Chkuaseli, Davit Gogiashvili, Zurab Loladze, Zaur Bolkvadze, Malkhaz Talakvadze, Givi Chichinadze and Robert Gogolashvili.
Since 2004, the full line-up of the Ensemble “University” — Kakha Grigalashili, Dato Kikabidze, Giga Abesadze, Givi Bakuradze, Zura Bakuradze, Dato Ugrelidze, Iason Meunargia and Levan Veshapidze — has joined “Georgian Voices”. At that time, “University” was already well known to Georgian music lovers, with the albums “Spring Blossomed the Almond” and “Earth and Heaven”.
